City & Guilds Pet Store Management

In the UK there are some 3,500 pet shops and approximately 600 specialist aquatic centres employing over 15,000 people. Independent retailers are usually privately owned and managed, but pet superstores, pet shop chains and garden centres with a pet section require trained staff and offer opportunities for a career in pet retail.

City & Guilds Level 3 Pet Store Management Qualification

The Pet Industry Federation offers pet retailers the City & Guilds Pet Store Management qualification. Pet retailers are required to hold a licence from their local authority in order to sell animals, and the Model Conditions for Pet Vending Licensing 2013 state that the proprietor must hold, or be working towards, an appropriate City & Guilds or Level 3 qualification. New applicants for a licence need to have completed this qualification within two years, and PIF can help retailers achieve this requirement by offering the City & Guilds Level 3 Pet Store Management qualification. Discounts for this course are available to members. The City & Guilds Principles of Animal Management within a Pet Store is a nationally accredited qualification covering livestock and business management. It is a key qualification for those wishing to hold a pet shop licence, recognised by local authorities when licensing premises.

The City & Guilds Level 3 Pet Store Management qualification is now accessible online, with retailers able to work through each of the modules via PIF's online portal, supported by a 'remote' tutor.
