Tuesday 20th October 2009

It was waggy tails all round at the British Dog Grooming Championship at the Kennel Club Building at Stoneleigh Park on Sunday 18th October, with over 400 people and 75 dogs attending. Tracy Ansell took the coveted title of Groomer of the Year. A groomer with 30 years experience, Tracy went home heavily laden with trophies, having won the Experienced Hand Strip and Clipped Gundogs class, the Experienced Standard Poodle class, as well as the Richard Barker Cup for the best overall poodle.

‘I’m absolutely over the moon, very pleased and very surprised,’ Tracy said. ‘There were a lot of really nice dogs and nice grooming, I thought it was a really good day.’

The competition was the biggest ever and included the first ever Junior Competition for 6-24 year olds, which was won by Emily Mulholland. Emma Smith took the Student and Newcomer top prize and Joanne Botwood won the Advanced Group.

‘The British Dog Grooming Championship goes from strength to strength,’ said Janet Nunn, chief executive of the Pet Care Trust, organisers of the event. ‘This year’s record number of competitors demonstrated groomers’ zest for excellence, within a lively atmosphere. We were delighted at the high levels of interest shown by groomers registering for CPD certification at our grooming demonstrations and seminars and plan to build on this flying start to our grooming championships at the Kennel Club Building.’

Plans are already underway for the 2010 Championship, when the British Dog Groomers’ Association will be celebrating the competition’s 30th anniversary.
